Last night my 8 year old asked me when she is going to stop calling me mommy and start calling me mom. I told her when she wants to. She said "never! I will always call you mommy!" Thought for a second and followed up with "unless I am a teenager or adult, cause that would be so embarrassing ".
My parents are Mom and Dad. I stopped saying Mommy/Daddy at a very young age (but I also have much older siblings who had stopped using these terms, so that probably influenced me).
My kids call me Mama and my husband, Daddy.
This is just me, but I cringe slightly inside when adults call their mother Mommy. I don't have the same visceral reaction to Daddy.
No first names for parents! That would seem weird and I don't know anyone who does that.
I'm Southern. Mama is Mama and Daddy is Daddy. Daddy died in 2010, but I still refer to him as Daddy. They were Grandmommy & Granddaddy to our kids. The grandchildren are all 25-30, and they still call my mother "Grandmommy", and their spouses/girlfriends do, too! It's adorable!
