Is it really that odd of a concept that you may be cool spending an afternoon or a dinner with someone but not a week of vacation?

I think it's pretty easy to understand.

This isn't your in-laws, is it?

Not sure of your situation but I find it helps to lay out your boundaries in advance because people have different ideas when it comes to vacations and time spent together.

It could be hard for the person with whom you ONLY want to spend a limited about of time to understand.

I mean, someone who believes they are a delight to be around wouldn't necessarily understand that some people can only tolerate them in small doses.

So, as usual, it depends ... on who is expected to understand.

As vacation time is usually limited, people are normally particular on how they spend it.

Hard to say anything else, because you didn't either.

Yep!!

I would spend an afternoon or dinner with almost anybody but would only spend a week of vacation with very few selected people.

Have an upcoming partially business-related trip to Las Vegas, 5 days.

A couple friends...good friends but have never overnighted anywhere with them (we're all married couples with kids...hang out a lot). But I know they don't gamble and eat/drink sparingly so...well...I'm no glutton or degenerate but I know we'd all be at odds over almost everything we'd have planned.

Ugh. Do you already have an idea of what you want to do when you're there? I'd pick one day where you spend that time doing an activity and having lunch/dinner together (i.e. Mob Museum/Neon Museum and lunch before, dinner after). You'll also have the business portion of the trip and maybe want a little time with your spouse alone for a nice dinner and show.

How did it ever come up that they're coming too? Did you invite them or did they invite themselves? Are you afraid to bring this up in advance for any reason?

Here's the thing...my vacation? I do whatever I/we want. Wife and I would discuss what we want to do each day or whatever. Adding new voices to that discussion...nope, not for me. That's no longer a vacation in my book.
