Interesting passage from a book I'm reading on Genghis Kahn by Jack Weatherford

"Smell holds a deep, important place within the steppe culture of Mongolia. Where other people in other cultures might hug or kiss at meeting or departing, the steppe nomads sniff one another in a gesture much like a kiss on the cheek. Smelling carried deeply emotional meanings on different levels that vary from familial sniff between parent and child to the erotic sniff between lovers. Each person's breath and unique body aroma is thought to constitute a part of the person's soul."

When Genghis's mother was kidnapped, away from her husband, as a departing gift she gave him her blouse as a reminder of her love, to be sniffed ad infinitum.

Well, animals do this upon greeting one another, no? And, as I'm encountering people on my walk with my ferret, for those that want to pet him, I tell them: Let him smell your hand first before petting him! And isn't that something you do before petting any animal, let them smell you first?

And how could you call this a perversion, if someone insisted on smelling you, in lieu of a kiss or hug? Or, perhaps you didn't want that person breathing in your soul?

I guess it depends on where they stick their nose.

Animals also walk around naked and lick their genitals without regard for privacy.

Smelling sounds even creepier than kissing or hugging.

I have a ferret, and some people don't like the musky smell of a ferret, but I do, and I find myself, many times, putting my nose to his head and inhaling and inhaling. Love that smell!

And so, being doing so, I'm breathing in his soul?

Yes.

Soon you will begin growing fur, your torso will get longer, and you will be walking on all fours.

Meaning you think either hugging or kissing are creepy?

No, just his dander.

The sense of smell is what stirs memories and emotions. I can get a whiff of something familiar and it can take me to a memory from years ago.

Yes, the smell of a particular cologne on someone can take me back to someone I dated years ago!

Smell is more powerful than some people realize.

I remember, in various relationships of my past, sleeping with someone at night, and being intoxicated by smelling someone's hair or the smell of their neck!

Terrible!

If it's not your culture why would you do that?
