Why in the world would you not want to say?

Since she's new, she might not have any idea where locals shop and where to get things that she might like. What possible harm is there in asking? Why on earth is something like that "off limits"?

Why?
I'm a woman and I don't get why this would be rude or annoying.

I'm a woman too and this might annoy me. What if I don't want the person shopping in places I shop and wearing similar clothes. That sounds mean, but it is true. Then it puts me on the spot if I feel the only options are lying or saying "I don't want to tell you."

I buy most of my clothes on sale, so I usually say that if I'm put on the spot. But I don't like when people ask me where I bought something.

You could always say "Can you keep a secret?" When she says yes, then say "so can I!" And smile.

Or smile and say "I have secret sources!". And don't say anything else.

Blow off her questions. Then change the subject.

Wow. So someone likes your style and may want to shop at the same store? How catty not to say.

Sorry. Our group of friends support each other, and want everyone to be as fabulous as they want to be. We are not so insecure that we must hide that kind of stuff from other people.

Amen!! I've never seen behavior this mean, especially to a new person who recently moved into the neighborhood. Is there a list of stores new people ARE allowed to patronize, as well as a dress code they need to follow? It's like not telling the new kid in class where the bathroom is.
