"Apologizing Does Not Mean You Are Wrong"

I am addicted to excessive apologizing. I believe that one should not apologize without sincerely accepting blame, but saying "I'm sorry" has become a bit of a crutch for me. I was once advised to replace "I'm sorry" with "Oh, my!" by a someone who thought the awkwardness of repeating this phrase would break the habit. I wish I had done that.

But I think the OP is talking about a sincere apology when one doesn't feel it's warranted for the sake of the relationship. To me that depends on a whole host of factors.

How can it be sincere in that case?

Apologies should be reserved for a situation where the apologizer did something wrong, or there is benefit of the doubt that possibly something wrong was done.
