I went to a national chain optometry place to get new contact lenses. The optometrist was a woman who clearly did not like me. No idea what her issue was, but she literally made a face as soon as she saw me. I have never been there before or met this woman.

I was wearing my lenses (because I need them to see.) I mentioned that I sometimes also wear colored contacts and she rolled her eyes and told me that colored lenses "don't look great." I said that I actually have a couple pairs that are hand painted by a guy who does them for Hollywood and they look really natural, but she said "I am sure they look the same as the rest of them. Awful." I wasn't paying her for her aesthetic opinion, just my exam. No point in arguing.

She refused to write me a prescription saying that she wouldn't because my normal lenses were not one the chain carries, and she wanted me to get a brand they sold. I said no thanks, I just want to update mine. We went back and forth until I got more firm and said that I really needed my RX for my regular lenses. She finally relented, though she was visibly cranky. She scribbled the RX and left the exam room abruptly. Honestly I was a bit thunderstruck. I had no idea why she was being so difficult.

I got the RX filled and started getting blinding headaches. I can't see well with this new RX. Its clearly not right. I started wearing my old lenses again but my RX is expired. I really need an updated one with the right power.

I called the chain and made a complaint. They wanted to give me a free exam at the same shop, but she is the only optometrist. I still need my contacts. I get one free eye exam a year with my insurance, so I could certainly go elsewhere and just pay out of pocket, but its kind of the principle of the thing.

What would you do?

I'd go back and explain politely that this is my second trip, her attitude is unacceptable, and I will go up the chain with a formal complaint. I'd have a friend sitting there waiting, and reveal after everything is done that the entire event has been captured on video.

I got an eye exam and RX one time for contacts, and was walking into walls. I had to get it redone. The optometrist didn't know what she was doing.

I have a dr. Who started playing with my contact rx to get better results (bifocal contacts)
After almost having a car crash because my sight was so blurry I had a heart to heart with her.
I told her to stop playing with the numbers and just give me my previous rx. I mentioned I would hate to take you to court in the event of an accident caused by your mistake on my prescription.
She stopped the adjusting and filled out the correct one for my eyesight.

GO back to her. Explain to your insurance her actions. Demand that she make it right.

You have the right to ask for another exam at another location. But she shouldn't have written the RX without having you try the lenses she wanted to prescribe first. How different is this new RX that you can't see and are getting blinding headaches?

Make an appointment for a check-up with an ophthalmologist, who is a medical doctor with a specialist degree, not just a optometrist. Get your Rx there and get your eyes checked for any medical issues. Then take the Rx to the optometrist.

It sounds as if the person you saw was rude as well as incompetent.

Several few years ago,for some reason I started having a terrible time getting the correct lens prescription. Lasted till a couple of years ago when we finally found a good doctor and optician combo.

Before then, I would eventually get the correct prescription but it required persistence.

First time the person who put the lenses in the glasses put them in backwards. And when I complained he said said well you're just not used to them. Get used to them.

A friend was upset because she didn't like her optician company being so irresponsible with her eyes. That time another good friend told her if she wanted she could get a permit for a peaceful protest and stand outside the eye glass place with a poster. That's what she did.

A couple of years after that I got on another hamster wheel of bad experiences having glasses made....prism for some reason when the doctor didn't prescribe it; the 'break' in each lens which provides for long distance and short distance eyesight was in the wrong place.

At another place, the young woman helping me figure out why I was not seeing properly out of my new lenses was very industrious, really trying everything to figure it out. The doctor happened to come out, I mentioned the issue, she said oh, you just need to get used to them...a popular excuse. The young woman eventually said she wanted to try one more thing. She checked not the prescription strength etc but whether there was a prescription in the lens. Ta da. The place that made them had, on one lens, moved the prescription to the left slightly, leaving a small vertical area of one lens with not prescription and the rest of that lens off kilter.

The purpose of corrective lenses is to adjust vision for health of the eye ( no straining). or protection.
A patient is allowed the current prescription. They are at liberty to purchase their eyewear at any facility licensed to operate .
A tip: always keep copies of prescripts for years. It gauges your eye health or stability.
I would not go back to this place...Other then to get a refund .
Contact your insurer to explain the need for a new appointment for accurate prescription.
And yes..Colored contacts are aesthetic as are most designer frames. Be practical or get an eye opener reaction at the inflated price to be styling!

What would you do?
Go to an eye doctor, an ophthalmologist, for a thorough workup, instead of a store-front optometrist. You may have the wrong prescription, or there may be something else going on.

Don't get wrapped up in the "but they OWE me!" B.S. when it comes to your health and your eyes. You went to the store. You got crappy service and a bad outcome. Why do you think that going back would be any different?

Complain to your insurance company that this provider is unacceptable -- getting dropped by an insurance provider gets the attention of the owners of the shop, who depend on insurance payments.
