Nope. Sounds like he has some issues dealing with conflict. If you were to experience an issue during the work, you may be dealing with that anger.

what an unpleasant scene that must have been. It's always shocking and disappointing to see that side of anyone. I'm sorry but he would be off my anything list.

I probably wouldn't hire him for two basic reasons.

First of all, I'd rate him as a security risk.

Secondly, a lot of people in this world operate under "Professionally one way, but personally another". I don't for me, it is the same across the board. If there is no legal requirement, I will apply my own moral code to it.

I wouldn't hire him as he showed himself to be a jerk, racist, etc. There are too many good people out there trying to make a buck for me to concern myself with a tool like the contractor.

I would hesitate to hire anyone that is unstable. If you can't control your emotions I do not want you anywhere near my property. The fact that it was racist in nature is just icing on the cake.

There's more to life than saving a buck here and there.
It matters who I work with and the folks I hire.

I think my final conclusion would be that it's wrong to blackball him for his private opinions. HOWEVER.
These weren't private thoughts.
These were thoughts that were bellowed all over the lumber store.

I somewhat agree. However if I personally witnessed it I probably wouldn’t hire him because as well as being racist it sounds like he has anger issues. At any rate, I don’t know the beliefs of most people I hire for a job and it’s really none of my business.

No, I said nothing of his quality of work. There's professional and respectful people out there who can do the job and it be better than "okay". I get to use my own moral compass in decisions like this.

The OP already indicated that the work was average, so this isn't even a factor. It's not as if the person was the best in the business. Personally, that would not matter to me, anyway, as I would not have an abusive jerk on my property, but given the fact that he was "not bad, not stellar," why even think twice? There have to be people out there whose work is at least as high in quality as that guy's, and probably a lot better.
