True, but in THIS case the OP said: It looks like he was registered two months ago, and they just had a baby (their first) a month ago.
This isn't a case of kids in high school texting/sexting/exchanging pics.
Anyway, is the OP gonna inquire to find out the details? Or just assume the best?

Okay thanks for this info as I did extra research, this actually clears things up a bit and I am breathing a little easier. Looks like when he was 18 is when he was officially charged, not two months ago. It's two months ago that he appeared in my area, but after looking at the state's official website, the crime was committed when he was 18, and the victim was 17, so this makes more sense. What exactly did he do though? Was he just having sex with a 17 year old or did he sexually assault her?
The term Sex Offender has as many nebulous overtones as DUI. When you hear of someone getting a DUI, what do you automatically assume? Was it .082 or was it 1.9, completely different. Does anyone ever ask, or just the assumptions he was too drunk to drive.
Well, not completely different. Both are illegal Blood Alcohol levels.
Anyone who tests .08 or higher is legally impaired. I don't want to ride with a driver who feels "buzzed."
Had a family that lived across the street from our kids school. One of the parents reported that an adult in the house had a sex offence against a minor. Many of the parents were upset that someone like that could live that close to a school. Rumors spread, bad news got out, and people got upset. It was the talk of the parents as they dropped off the kids.
The real story came out. A teenager had been dating a girl in High School. Her parents did not like him. He turned 18 and the parents went to the police. The girl was a couple years younger than him. That was some years back. I think in California they changed or were trying to change the law. When a kid hits 18 and is dating someone within a few years of their age the courts are more relaxed on that kind of thing. Not sure if that ever got changed or not.
The age of consent before 1900 was roughly 12YO, then it went up to 14YO and in the 30's it has stayed steady at 16YO. And the last time I checked, it was still 14YO in Italy.
Now if you look at old photo's of your grandparents and especially your great grandparents, who you may revere, but little do you know they could have been sex offenders today, locked up behind bars, for dating someone 14YO.
I've read hundreds of True Crime books, and in the cases of children sex offenders, in so many of these cases, they were sexually offended themselves when much younger. It's almost like it become hereditary, and they go on auto pilot.
I once read of a woman who was severely abused, mostly physically, as a child, and even before she had children she vowed she's never so much as slap one her children. She had 5 children and she went on auto pilot, couldn't stop herself, and was arrested for physical abuse of her children. Her failure was not seeking out psychological counseling.

I think there’s some question about how they arrived at .08. I think a lot of it has to do with money more than people think. DUIs have enriched many municipalities coffers over the last 10-20 years. I’d probably hit .08 after one glass of wine and I wouldn’t be buzzed at all.
Sleep-deprived drivers are equal to drunk drivers, but they haven't come up with a test yet to see how many hours of sleep you had the night before, and when that happens, the money will really roll in!
According to an article I read in The Nat'l Geographic, on sleep, it's been estimated that if you're up for 24 hours behind the wheel of a car or truck, it's the equivalent of having 3 shots of whiskey in your body.
I've personally seen it. Saw a coworker at a college job on the registry. Offense was something like committed a lewd act on a minor, which obviously sounds bad. Turned out at 17 he had sex with his 15 year old girlfriend, and her parents had him arrested. By the time I knew the guy he was married with children, to that same no longer 15 year old girl.
Reminds me of a friend's family a few years ago in CA. Teenage daughter accused dad of molesting her, she later recanted and admitted she lied because she was mad at something. She had a chance of going to jail then, so the dad plead guilty and went to jail so she wouldn't. He was in prison with several 18 year olds who had sex with their younger girlfriends. He's on the registry.
