This whole thread reads like an advertisement for Amazon gift cards.
Weeeel, seeing as how no one required following a link to purchase one before reading a reply, what's your problem? They have their uses. They don't suit every situation. No different than opting for a glittery card or any other gift. No one's forcing anyone to do anything.
For older parents who have everything.....gift cards for hair or nail salon, grocery stores, movie theatres, massages, restaurants, gas stations. My late MIL had very limited income, more than once we just had money applied on her utility bills to give her a little breathing room. I don’t know anyone who subscribes to a newspaper any more, if they still do, extend their subscription.

Super helpful post. Thanks for stopping by.
The reality is that there's not much you can't buy at Amazon, so it has about 90-95% of the utility of a prepaid Visa without the activation fee.
I'm not a huge proponent of gift cards for gifts, but they have their purposes, like my 15-19 year old nieces/nephews who can then just get whatever they want.
Also, if you give an Amazon gift card, they can use it to buy a gift for someone else, which is what I've done with my gift card.
Another idea, for my daughter's birthday every year, I go on the county website and pay her renewal for her car tags. She always says it's the best present.
Amazon gift cards are perfect! In fact, I got a few of them for some of my family members this year. Amazon has just about everything. Plus I have found that most people, including myself, are Amazon Prime members. So whatever they use their gift card on will have either free 1 day, or 2 day shipping.
This is a hypothetical. I personally haven't been in any situation where I couldn't think of a better gift than an Amazon.com gift card.
If you were, though - probably not with someone close to you - would you think it's a smart choice? The recipient would have to be Internet-savvy, but I mean more the impersonality of it. Still, I lean toward it over cash or a card to a physical retailer that I don't know the person likes much. I can't find evidence that it's a common Christmas present, however.
It's good enough for my family...lol. Every year my 2 adult kids and my brother get an Amazon gift care (the tins are so cute!) and usually something little to unwrap, like socks or a box of candy or a bottle of wine. We aren't really into stuff but it's great to be able to go online and order something you want or need when the time comes.
