This is a hypothetical. I personally haven't been in any situation where I couldn't think of a better gift than an Amazon.com gift card.

If you were, though - probably not with someone close to you - would you think it's a smart choice? The recipient would have to be Internet-savvy, but I mean more the impersonality of it. Still, I lean toward it over cash or a card to a physical retailer that I don't know the person likes much. I can't find evidence that it's a common Christmas present, however.

Bottom line: It's a gift.

Someone hypothetically not close to you would be receiving a free bit of whatever they want, thanks to you.

I don't see the problem.

I'm giving my niece (25) and nephews (16, 19) each an Amazon gift card, and I already know they're going to love it.

If you know a person well enough to buy them a gift I think you would know what restaurants they like.

The question is not how we would feel about it. The question is how will the intended recipient feel about it? If you don't know the intended recipiient well enough to answer that question, I think a cash gift is better.

no. Why not just a pre-paid Visa - can be used anywhere.

And with all the issues i've been reading about with these independent Amazon delivery people - they probably won't get their package anyway.

Amazon card sounds great. I forgot that I had received a gift card months ago that I had entered into my Amazon account, last night I ordered something small and at checkout, boom, instantly paid for by that gift card.

I would do an Amazon gift card unless I see the person in-person regularly, am relatively close to them, and know things that they would want.
