Hickory doesn't border an ocean, it is in central/ western NC, therefore waterfront property might be hard to get.

My father grew up in Hickory & my sister eventually moved there. I have always loved going there. A large enough town to have what you need & stuff to do, but small enough to be friendly & down to earth.

I've fished in the Catawba River & caught some decent fish, various types.

I'm sure there are waterfront homes on Lake Hickory, don't remember for sure.

Unfortunately, furniture & textiles were their main industries & are hurting badly. My brother in law is among the few furniture workers still doing that. His co. is surviving for the moment.

I still enjoy visiting there & would not hesitate to move there if need be & could find a job or get a business going. A fine town for making lifelong friends.

Expensive? Our urban areas are the most costly, by and large.

Having grown up in "Hickville" - this exact response is why some in the area may not like you initially. The Elitist attitude like the quote above is never liked, but if you are friendly you will definitely be welcomed with open arms.

Very strong accents there. Just like you will have a very strong accent from Long Island. I work with plenty now to know. So, take that in to consideration when you are moving. You will get some jokes, like if they moved to LI.

Hickory is a great place to live to most people. We have toyed around with moving there a few times. Furniture was king in Western NC 20 years ago. Now, they are having to re-invent themselves to supply jobs. Google has a complex in Lenoir. There are good jobs around, but they are scarce. Nice weather with still some snow. Not as much as the mountains or what you are used to. Hour trip to play in the mountains and about 4 hours to the coast. Roughly an hour to play in Charlotte, see a Bobcats or Panthers game. Still about 2.5 hours to see the Hurricanes. And a decent, but small lake for boating around.

Not many jobs around, so have that tied up before the move. You should be able to get a great house moving from LI. Come in with a great attitude and you'll be happy you moved.
