I thought I would share some various 4th of july celebrations in this state in case you are nearby one of these locations. Something I have learn is often the small towns have the better celebrations.
SOUTHPORT
It's billed as the state's official Fourth of July festival, a matter of its incorporation in 1972. The festival's antecedents go back to 1795.
Details: Includes a regatta, a parade, a road race, arts and craft vendors, a naturalization ceremony, beach events, entertainment and children's activities.
WILMINGTON
Food vendors and music from the Minute Men of the 440th N.C. Army National Guard Band and the UNC-Wilmington Wind Symphony, followed by fireworks exploding over the Battleship North Carolina
BEAUFORT
Parade -- with kids, pets, wagons, flags and music -- on the waterfront, then a community potluck at Carteret County Courthouse. As for the history, James R. Heintze of American University notes that in 1786, an errant artillery shell during a celebration set fire to the courthouse.
DUCK
A mile-long parade -- with a canine section -- then music and other festivities at Duck Town Park
PINEHURST
After the 9 a.m. pet parade comes the Village Community Parade with the Kazoo Band, Fine Blue Line Bluegrass Band, Marine Corps Color Guard and Irish Dancers
WINSTON-SALEM
OLD SALEM MUSEUM AND GARDENS
It was here, in 1783, that the Moravians responded to Gov. Alexander Martin's order to celebrate the country's independence on July 4. Martin was the first governor to do so, and the peace-loving Moravians were first to respond, with a musical program called "Psalm of Joy."
Beware of references that call the event "America's first celebration of July 4th." It's not that simple, as Philadelphians and Bostonians will tell you. The modern observance includes the reading of the Declaration of Independence, Salem Militia forms on Salem Square and fire drills with a bucket brigade.
