Pride is typically in June in most cities, since it commemorates the Stonewall riots in June of 1969, the birth of the modern Gay Rights movement. NC did initially hold it in June, starting in Durham but moving to different cities in the state so as not to seem "biased", throughout the 1990s, but I think this was seen as disorganized, or something? Sometime in late '90s or early '00s, it was "anchored" in Durham, made into an official non-profit, and moved to late September, for reasons I've heard explained as:
1) In June, people would go to the larger Prides such as NY, DC, Atlanta, etc and not be here.
2) HOT HOT HOT in June in NC
3) Since it is centered in the Triangle, with 3 universities, student populations provide heavy attendance numbers. If it's held in June, they are gone. Having it in September allows all of the college groups to participate.
Ironically, now separate cities outside Durham are starting to have their own Pride Festivals anyway--I know Charlotte, Boone, the Triad, and starting next year, Raleigh will, most of them in earlier summer closer to June
