I bought my new car in Wisconsin right before I moved here in July. I didn't register it because I would just have to register again in NC
I paid cash, but didn't pay sales tax. The finance guy at the dealership said I will pay sales tax when I register the car here in NC.

Everyone I've talked to here says they've never heard of such a thing.

I finally got my license last week and plan to register and get tags next week. Just wondering if I need to prepare to write that big check right then and there, or if I'll be taxed some other way.

Either way, I have no misconceptions about not paying it. Someone's getting paid.

Hmm, well, I know that you typically need to how evidence of paying sales tax if you want to get your name on the title in NY, not sure about NC

When we registered our car (about 3 years ago), they didn't ask us whether or not we had paid sales tax (we owned our car free and clear, cash transaction also). However, there is a one time "registration" fee (not to be confused with the annual registration fee) that you have to pay when you change your registration from another state to NC - it was almost $300 for our car. THEN in a few weeks or months, you will receive your property tax bill for your vehicle, which you will have to pay every year. The amount is a percentage of KB for your car - and they seem to use high KB, too.

NC does not apply sales tax to vehicle sales. Instead there is a highway use tax of 3% of the sales price that is due when you apply for registration. In certain cases, if the car is new, they will give credit for taxes paid in another state. In your case, it sounds as if you will just need to pay the full tax. You pay this once. So for example, if you paid $30,000 for the vehicle, your tax will be $900.

Later you will also receive a property tax bill for the vehicle. This will come from your locality and will be at the prevailing tax property tax rate of the county and municipality (if you are inside a city). This is due yearly.

Personally, I think charging someone property tax for something that you don't live in is real crock of shlt, but hey that's just me....

wow, I don't think anyone has told you anything that you don't already know, nor have they answered your question. I would guess that you will have to write a check for the road tax when you register your car before you can get your plates, but I don't know for sure. Let us know if they get you at that point or bill you later.

They'll do both - you're going to write a check when you get your plates for the "road tax", and you're going to write another check later for the property tax. The "road tax" only gets charged once, when you first register your car in NC, the property tax will be billed and you will have to pay it every year.

I traded in my $12,000 a year property taxes in NJ for a newer same size house in NC with $2,100 in property taxes.
A few bucks a year on auto taxes is nothing compared to the 7% sales tax you pay on new or used cars in NJ.

BTW NJ workers do not make 5 times the salary of NC workers.

Perhaps. But, we have a ton of other taxes that you didn't have in NJ: sales tax on food, for example. And, yes, there IS sales tax on a car purchase. There are property taxes on this car that can be $1000.00/year, depending upon your car, year, etc. You will see...the difference is that NC packages the taxes in smaller bites, but, when you add them up, they are not THAT much different.
