Hi,

My family (four dogs and my old lady), are interested in moving to NC from Eastern PA. Can you give suggestions of where to live. We both work in IT, and looking for reasonable cost of living.

IT jobs have been few and far between anywhere in NC for over 2 years now. Start a job search first, then if you actually get an offer research the city to see if it's the kind of place you want to live. Picking the city first is backwards these days I'm afraid.

You would have an easier (not easy) time applying for IT jobs in the military areas of NC. Namely Camp Lejeune, Cherry Point, Seymour Johnson and Fort Bragg. For the same reason that the DC area has weathered the recession (Gov't jobs and Gov't contractor jobs) so has the counties that house these bases. The triangle area actually has more jobs in the IT field, to be honest, but they also have more competition for said jobs. I don't belive there's actually been much hiring in the field as of late. Regards lovesMountains is correct when she says start with a job search.

You're going to need to give a LOT more detail than this. You ask "what would fit our needs?" but then you don't tell us what these "needs" are (other than an IT job, which you would want to line up BEFORE moving).

What price range? Urban or rural? Mountains, Piedmont, or Coastal? Liberal or conservative? There are many things you'll need to tell us before anyone can give you any guidance on "what will fit your needs". Why are you settled on NC yet seem to have no vision of what you're looking for? How do you know what you seek is in NC?

Homes - $250,000 price range (2+ Acres)
More rural, but yet in somewhat distance of a city.
Would like to live near the mountains.
Liberal or Conservative - Doesn't matter

Asheville, Winston Salem and maybe Cherokee (casino) might work. Not sure about availablity of IT work. Charlotte?? that is not too far from the mountains and might be best chance at IT work...
