This is my first full year in NC. I just noticed my car tags expire in a few days at the end of the month, so I'm off in a minute to get the car inspected (that much I do know I need), but, am I supposed to have received something in the mail from the State regarding renewing tags? In our previous state, we always got something in the mail a month in advance of the expiring month, and we could pay the fees by mail, too. We just moved from an apartment into our new house 2 months ago, but we should've received any forwarded mail.

Thanks.

You should get a registration renewal notice in the mail at least one month before the old registration expires. Renewing on line is easy.

What has changed recently in NC is that you may now have you car inspected up to 90 days before your registration expires, but it most be done *before* you renew your registration. Previously in NC, you needed your new registration before the inspection could be done.

So the process is:

Get renewal notice in mail, have inspection completed, renew registration on line, affix new license plate sticker when received in the mail.

It sounds like the first step was missed somehow in your case. Just get it inspected and renew on line with the info on your old registration.

Thanks, Faux and Frank. Just got it inspected, and when I asked him about the missing renewal notice, he asked if I'd paid taxes on the car. I don't want to get behind on any taxes, but I'm not sure I know what he's talking about with that. ???

Off to the website to renew online.
Thanks.,

If you fail to pay the County property tax on your vehicle your registration privileges will be blocked by DMV.

Try the website, see what happens .

Hmm.....just paid for the renewal online and realized I was never asked about the inspection. I thought the inspection had to be done before you could renew???

About the county tax---is the county responsible for trying to collect, or do I have to hunt someone down to pay?

Thanks.

Mecklenburg: You can call 311 to find out about taxes or take the easy way I do and e-mail taxmeck@mecklenburgcountync.gov and ask what's up.

It's possible that the online renewal already talked to the inspection computer but that would be mind boggling. I've got to take care of mine too and it's registration blocked until inspected so I'll see how fast it clears.

I've been able to have my registration processed online within 30 minutes of completing the inspection. The guys in the shop say to wait 24-48 hours, so I'm not sure what the official time line is.

If you only have a few days before your tags expire, you should ALWAYS go to the office to renew. It takes them about 7-10 days by snail mail for your sticker to get to you. I just did mine over the weekend and I'm anxiously hoping I didn't cut it too close (expires 11/30).

I was told at the shop that the computers update at 12:00 midnight every night, so as soon as you pass inspection, you need to wait till the next day to renew online. If you go to the DMV office, you just need to give them the proof of your passing and you get your sticker right away.

As for the taxes due, the letter always comes three months after registration is due like clockwork.

Thanks everyone.

The online site took the registration and my credit card, and I have confirmation printed. This was within 30 minutes of having it inspected (came straight home, read the replies with the link, went to the link and did it) because I didn't know I was supposed to wait. I guess I can always carry that conf. in case I get stopped for expired tags before my stickers arrive.

I registered the cars this time last year and never rec'd anything about paying taxes on them. I guess it's in arrears and will be due next year on this past whole year of being here? Oh well...they know where I live now since on the website, I was also able to update my address.

Thanks again, everyone!
