We just purchased a car from an out of state individual seller, not a dealer. The state does NOT require a notarized signature to transfer title. However, the NC DMV's site says this "Furnish the title properly assigned, and notarized to you." Will they take the title without the notary? Will a notarized bill of sale work in its place?

FWIW, I sold a vehicle registered in NC to an individual also in NC and I signed the registration slip as I have in other states and figured that was it.
I was wrong. When the new owner tried to register it the NCDMV wouldn’t do it unless it was notarized. I took the registration paper to a Wachovia branch and had it notarized problem solved.

Thanks! I will have the seller wait to sign the title transfer until he gets to the bank and then have a notary acknowledge that he signed the instrument in their presence.

Yes, they will take it.

I bought a truck up in Virginia last year and drove it back on one of their 'moving' tags. Virginian doesn't require a notary. I took the title up to DMV and they accepted it no questions asked.

I need to notarize a title from CA which doesn't require a notary so there isn't any where on the title for me to sign or stamp it. Can I submit a separate piece of paper with the buyer and the seller's name notarized along with my stamp?
