When I was in McDowell Co. last week to take my mom home, I had to move a shopping cart out of the handicapped space to park. Of course, I am sure that "Shopping Cart Etiquette" varies greatly from town to town, probably even in the hated NY/NJ region.

I find that this thread has taken kind of an odd turn. I guess in these days this is a quality of life issue.

I've been reading all the various posts, pro and con, about living in NC. I was born and raised in NYC but my mother and her parents and their parents - going back to the 1700s - were residents of the NC area.

I lived in the Southern Pines area, mostly with my grandparents, in the early 70s. Eventually, I inherited their house in Cameron, and then sold it.

Now that I'm older, hopefully wiser, I wish I still had the house. I would move back there tomorrow.

And I think it's downright misleading to characterize something you see in south Charlotte as 'southern'. In all seriousness, the shopping cart photo you took is probably more indicative of life in NJ/NY than in the south. It doesn't have anything to do with a good or bad area. Even in the worst neighborhood I can think of, people still put their shopping carts up.

I would have to agree. People seem to fail to realize that the same people they are complaining about probably used to be their next door neighbor in NY.

Before we moved down here there was a rash of carjackings from parking lots. When a mom would put the kid & groceries in the car, & then went to put the cart away, a person would take the car, with the kid. These guys were really after the cars, not the kids, only one case that I remember vaguely was one where the creep was after the kid.
Prior to that it was considered rude to leave a cart out, b/c they blow all over the lot & hurt people & cars, even though there is always a guy to collect them. But, after these car jackings the reporteres were interviwing these women who were saying they would never put a cart back again. Sort of dumb, lock Junior in, take your jeys with you!
I sure don't miss that mess with the carts.

Here 2 years from long island and we never look back.Better quality of life,smiling faces,lower taxes,etc etc.A great place to live......Come and see for yourself.

I moved from Central Florida to Charlotte and feel like I LEFT the south!! That might be just me, I grew up in Plant City, FL which has a long agricultural history and it had some very friendly people with very religious upbringings.
I'm living in East Charlotte and have a bunch of NY'ers and New Jerseyites for neighbors. They are impossible to get along with. Its not a great apartment complex anyway but sheesh, you think people could leave the attitude behind. I drive the other side of Charlotte into Gaston County and people are hospitable and friendly and I hear that endearing southern accent that I love. I plan on buying a house where people's families have lived for generations not in a city of transplants!
I will admit though that I haven't seen as many horrible drivers in NC like I did in FL. People were aggressive as could be there. I have little problems driving here.

DevilDog, this one has been brought up before and my reply then was the same as now: A friend who moved here from PA and has been here for many years made the same comment as you just did, and when I asked her how she knew they were NC drivers she replied "they have NC license plates." Guess what was on the back of her car!
I am a NC native and have been driving for many, many years and I always use my signal.

I dont really know where not using your blinker came from. Ive always used mine and so does everyone I know. I think it might come from people using hand signals to signal a lane change or a turn rather than a blinker - just my thoughts.
