That far away from either will probably land you in a reasonably rural area. That said, grab a map. Anywhere that rural is gonna be one "chilled down hood."

You sure you wanna drive that far? Why an hour from Raleigh or Charlotte? You can live in the suburbs of either (Cary is actually a suburb of Raleigh) with a much shorter commute.
You have given essentially no information in what, specifically you are looking for. Do you have a job lined up somewhere? If not, have you really researched the job market in NC to see whether it's a reasonable move for you? If so, what kind of place are you looking for in detailed terms, other than "an hour from the city"? What kinds of things do you want to have access to--arts performances, sports, movie theatres, parks, ____?
It's hard to answer a question with very little to go on.
