You do realize if your older son does not have a NC high school diploma that you will have to pay out of state tuition for him?

In your price range expect to pay at the top of your budget in the Charlotte area if you want better schools. The triad (WS, Greensboro area) is a little more affordable, but you have to do your homework on schools.

If I were in your shoes I would consider areas branching out and away from Winston-Salem. That way commuting back to WS for work wouldn't be bad, but you could get more house for the money

I really like Surry County and the town of Mt. Airy. It is a 30 minute drive from Winston-Salem. It's small town America but several of the schools are rated highly and in addition there is a nice community college your older son could start at.

NC has a very strong community college system. Out of state tuition at one would be more affordable than out of state tuition at one of the universities. Many kids coming out of high school spend their first year in community college just getting the basics out of the way (English, math ect). It really saves them money and they can easily transfer to one of the state universities as a sophmore or junior. By the time you've been there a year you can establish residency and then get instate tuition. Here is the link to the Surry Community College:

Other areas surrounding Winston-Salem to check out would be Kernersville, Lewisville and Clemmons.

North of Greensboro you'd want to look at Summerfield.

Best of luck to you in your search.

I would look at Salisbury in the piedmont. The high school does not score well due to demographics, but there is a large core of exceptional teachers and well maintained, modern, facilities

You might want to look at New Bern or Newport, too. Pretty good schools, especially, if you live on the eastern side. New Bern has a pretty large hospital. Winterville, near Greenville would also be good. Lots of jobs for nurses at the big hospital there.

Her husbands job is allowing them to transfer to the Triad or the Charlotte metro - not the coast. Greenville and New Bern would not fit the bill.

I imagine the Triad area will fit your price range better. There is a subforum for that region where you can take specific questions.
