So I was looking at the post counts for the 50 states, and we're only 2nd to texas.
Why is that? Are we really that talkative? Why are we so much busier than a state like say, california, which has more people, yet only has 580 thousand posts?
This is fairly simple. A lot of ours is people wanting to move here. Who would want to move to Cal.? Plus compare the common sense politics of Cal to any other state. This should give you a few reasons.
We also love giving advice to people, or at least have been brought up that way. As a native North Carolinian, my parents instilled in me the importance of answering a question when it's asked of you, even if you don't know the answer, in which case you say that as well. And there are a lot of questions on these forums that many of us encounter daily and have answered before, like "Where do you like to go in the mountains/beach?" or "What's the appeal of Charlotte/Asheville/Wilimington/the Triad/the Triangle?" (thanks to good marketing and finishing high in polls there). And we've got a good mix of natives and newcomers to offer different perspectives, providing beyond what might be considered the stereotypical "Southern" answer. We have major airports, major interstates (40, 85 and 95) and major universities, all of which add to interest and a mix of good conversation. And a good split of politics as well - what more could you want? (Oh yeah, barbecue pork, don't forget that!)
NC used to be on top of Texas in CD posts until the latest recession took hold. Then the interest in Texas took off since its unemployment rate was lower.
NCers are just nicer---more polite, better manners, warmer sense of humor, more helpful and caring than in most other states---both in person and on these forums. It is one of the main reasons we want to move and retire in NC. We travel a lot and have lived in many different states---we are always surprised at how wonderful the people are in NC---hope it doesn't change with all us transplants coming in!
Also, C-D doesn't even delete posts, so you're looking at a cumulative post rate "ever". If you were to count psots only in, say, the past 2-3 years, I suspect we'd be a lot lower than 2nd. It was the flurry of interest in transplanting here around 2006-07 that had so many posting here then.
