mm34b: We knew you would come through! The pics of the horse fly matches what we have had here in eastern NC. Of course we are near a horse farm and enjoy the company of the neighboring cows, pigs, chickens and turkeys, and we are told that this is what attracts the horse flies...particulary horses (no pun intended). Don't know where you find all this wealth of information but it sure good to have around

I remember going to the local public swimming pool around here when I was younger and I remember those huge black horseflies. You had to stay under the water most of the time when they were around or they would land on you. I was bitten by the smaller horseflies as a child. I can't imagine how those big ones would feel.

I saw one of these last night:

Hummingbird Moth

It took me some time to decide it wasn't a bird.

It's not a cicada. I know what they're talking about. I lived in the backwoods of West Virginia and have only seen about 4 my entire life.
The best way to describe them is to take a housefly and now make it 2-5 inches long. No different body shape or form at all ... just a MONSTROUS giant fly. They act just like a fly in every way ... look JUST like a fly. No difference in body or wing structure that I can think of all all.
I've tried finding them on the internet but still haven't seen a picture -
