I would check out Waynesville, Weaverville and even Boone - all of them have great homeschooling communities and should fit within your time frame to Lincolnton. Greensboro, IMHO is definitely a city, it seems huge coming from Boone / Waynesville.

Hello,
I am looking for info on Lincolnton, Hickory and other towns close by. Our daughter lives in Fort Mill, SC and we want to be close to the grandkids but in a smaller community and closer to the mts. We are retired and living in WI. We are also democrats.... which would be best? I know Asheville would be great, but a little too far from the family.

You mention that you are Democrats, which means either that the politics of the area is important to you or that you think yours will be to them. That's one point for Hickory. Lincolnton may be too conservative for you.

Morganton is west of Hickory, so closer to the mountains. It's smaller than Hickory but big enough to have its own basic shopping. If "mountain" is what you like about Asheville, look at Morganton. If "liberal" is what you like about Asheville, skip Morganton.

You're retired, so jobs and schools aren't a consideration. Other than that, you haven't said much about what you're looking for. Anywhere would probably do. If you're unsure, rent for a while.

I actually think of the Hickory/Morganton areas as the most bedrock-Conservative part of the whole state (the triangle between Winston-Salem, Charlotte, and Asheville; the 5th and 10th Congressional districts). Still, the larger the town, the more likely you are to find kindred spirits politically. But I definitely think Lincolnton is a very Republican area, so compared to there, Hickory would be more Democratic.
