I saw the billboard heading west on I-40 yesterday and wondered what was up. Apparently, there is some doubt about the future of specialty plates for vehicles
I have been waiting nearly 9 months for the Civil War plate I ordered in October 2011.
The Senate might be thinking they are too expensive to sell or just too many varieties>?
I really couldn't care less about the plates themselves.
However, if this is a revenue source for the state, it seems odd that they would want to kill it, unless it will adversely affect a more lucrative revenue stream...(which is likely the case).
Where is the extra $20 dollars going? I use to have one, and I had to pay additional $20 dollars every year plus regular plate fees. Do they not have inmates producing plates anymore?
It sad when on regular license plate, South Carolina has a cool looking, colorful license plate.
That state has less taxes and drivers, so someone in Raleigh is not managing money well.
I wish the plate office let me keep the specialty plate when I replaced it as I see it not available no more. It would have been a collector item.
On regular plates, I know someone who bought a car and apparently the state has gone back to blue lettring, Im going to see if they will least replace this boring red letters.
In Arizona, the extra twenty bucks went to the charity or organization that sponsored the special plate. It was truly a fund raising effort for them, and a very effective one. Additionally, it provided free 'advertising ' for the charity in the form of public awareness.
I know that some of the special plates work the same way in NC, but some of the "charities" that sponsored the NC plates don't fit a "charity " model so I'm not sure.
I could see eliminating the "also ran" groups altogether as a cost saving measure...
but the more popular ones (like the BRP) should remain as they are.
I like the plates, but I would prefer focus and attention on other, more pressing issues. Sorry.
It just seems there is no end to tangential issues which provide convenient excuses for the folks in Raleigh to delay doing the heavy lifting they were elected to do.

The basic blue biplane design is 30 years old. The white backgrounds (with either blue, red, or green characters) are 46 years old. For the love of God we should try something else. I think we have the dullest plates in the country.
Before I got my BRP plate this spring I *requested* the biplane plate.
Still have it in the trunk of the car.
