Auto parts maker FCC will expand its operations in Laurinburg, investing $57 million and adding 66 workers to its 140 over the next three years. The company makes ATV clutches, transmissions and other components.
Great news for an area that's been severely beaten down (economically) over the past couple of decades. In the 1960's through most of the 1980's, Scotland County had a solid economic base, with lots of diverse manufacturing, agricultural, and service sector employers. The outsourcing craze hit this area hard, along with big corporate farming operations that put many of the little guys out of business, to the point that the county now has the highest unemployment in the state. I do hope this signals better times ahead.
Good for them. Scotland has the highest unemployment rate of 18%. more needs to be done though
