We are new residents of Raleigh, and after 20+ years in Phoenix, AZ we'd like to see what the autumn leaves look like again.

We are retired, so an overnight or two is just fine with us. We've looked at the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad trips, but the mixed reviews make me ask: Are there other ways that we can enjoy this beauty without my husband having to be the driver 100% of the time?

Suggestions where to go, etc. are MOST appreciated!

If you are going to drive, the Blue Ridge Parkway provides gorgeous vistas from many lookouts.

This site will provide a lot of information about where to see good leaf color (and when) around the greater Asheville / Western NC area:

There are many places to stay - from hotels to cabins - that can offer you some breathtaking views while seated and still.

One place I like is an old inn - Balsam Mountain Inn. It's a bit southwest of Asheville.

Dupont Forest State Park is a little-known gem in western NC, with three major waterfalls and a great collection of trails. We usually stay at the Sassy Goose, which is right next to the park entrance.
