We are currently living in Charlotte and the DH has a travelling job. He will be in another state for the next 6-8 months travelling back to Clt every other weekend or once a month.I am planning to go stay with him for a few months.
We currently live in an apt and to cut costs I want to let go of it for the time I stay with him but we want to keep our NC license and maintain NC as our base since we will be back after 6-8 months time. DO we need to have a residence in NC to maintain status ? We do not want to officially move to the other state.
In this case, how can I maintain NC residency. Any one please help.
DO we need to have a residence in NC to maintain status? Yes.
We do not want to officially move to the other state. OK
...how can I maintain NC residency.
The question is which method of subterfuge is least problematic.
I'd suggest that you rent a room or just move in with your neighbor/cousin...
no matter how little you pay them or how few nights you spend there.
Once a month or so they can send you a care package of mail an such.
What are you needing residency for? The most common thing is for in-state tuition. I would read about residency on the webpage of the schools in consideration.
You can maintain state residency, even if you don't have an apartment or house here. If your work or that of a spouse is a TDY (temporary duty), then make sure you are paying NC income taxes. That would mean whoever writes the check knows to send your taxes to the State of NC (and the IRS, of course).
We were in a similar situation for nine years. Yes, nine years. We wanted to maintain permanent residency here in NC, even though we lived in Virginia. Our employer took out taxes for NC, for which we got a credit in VA, and we continued to vote by absentee in NC because we knew we would come back here. We did file a VA tax return. We did get a VA license and by VA tags for our cars, even though we did not have to do that, since we were legally NC residents because that is where we paid taxes and voted. I was in a civilian job vs a military position. Military personnel can have their legal residency anywhere.
If you follow this route, keep a pay stub or something with you that shows you are paying NC taxes and have your voter registration card (if you can find it :-)
As a footnote, we would have saved money if we had not kept permanent residency in NC and paid taxes in VA where the tax rate was one-percent lower than it was in NC. We just wanted to keep our NC ties. For tax records purposes, NC would have shown that our NC address was a house in Virginia. And, there's nothing illegal because your assignment is for 6-8 months and you have your legal ties to the state.
