I was paid $40K with 12 years experience. I also made $40K for 9 years, 10 years and 11 years. I believe NC is either number 48 or 49 in the country for teacher pay? Mississippi is or may be the only state with LOWER teacher pay?
With the republican McCrory forecast to win the governors race, Mississippi teachers will soon no longer be the lowest paid teachers in the US.

The benefits at large corporations are comparable.
While there is a defined benefit plan for state employees still, there likely won't be for long. And it still requires a 6 percent contribution.
I don't think teachers get any extra social security benefit. And most companies offer before tax 401ks - whether or not they match it is another story.
The fact is, for a comparably educated and skilled person working in the private sector (or even in another capacity in the public sector), teachers could earn much more. The low pay is one of the reasons we're attracting the bottom quarter of college graduates to the profession.

Again spend time in the retirement forum and many of those comfortable are wealthy savers/investors or folks with government pensions. NC pension system is one the handful of best funded pension systems in the country and recognized as such. Teachers in NC still earn and receive SS benefits and that along with the pension provides a fixed income stream without worrying about ROI or drawdown rates. Top it with a 403B plan and you have the traditional three legs of retirement that very few non government employees have anymore. I have known many who left the profession and as they hit their fifties or sooner the regrets were pronounced. As they hit their sixties, oh well!
Is that $30,800 with or without the local supplement?
Dos it matter? Depending on where you teach the supplement ranges from $800 up to $6500...and still depends on yeas of experience. Just because Wake County "averages" $6K, not all teachers will get that amount.
