I meant that I was (and always am) wearing contacts, but how do they know without checking? They just took my word for it when asked. Glasses are a little more verifiable without the officer getting three inches from your face to check.

LOL - I knew what you meant! and I agree, how do they know. Did you know that Lasik can be disqualifying....... (as she leaves him to ponder that bit of info...)
SouthernGal2:
Of course he can take the eye test wearing his reading glasses. I wore mine when I recently took my test and had no problem at all. The eye examiner let me test without the glasses first just to see if I could pass but I had some difficulty. When I wore my glasses which are not very strong, but one eye is weaker than the other, I passed with no problem at all. If your husband cannot pass an eye test with glasses then he should NOT be driving on the public roadways. Lord knows we have enough accidents without adding to the mix.

Reason: two mispelled words

Just wanted to make sure. With that face I didn't want you to think I was driving around blind (which would be about true without my "corrective lenses")! And I don't trust LASIK. I've seen too many James Bond films to trust anything to do with lasers AND eyes.

Are you sure you've got your contacts in? That laser is no where near 007's eyes ;-D
Slight correction to requirements for NC driver's license
From the DVM website, note that 20/40 and 20/100 requirements are for at least one eye, not both. That takes care of us with Mono-vision eye correction where we use one eye to see distance and one for up close reading.
Sight
Unrestricted License
With or without glasses you must have 20/40 vision in at least one eye. Restricted License
You must have a minimum of 20/100 vision in at least one eye.

Great info and thank you for sharing and digging up this old thread because I think I need to go clear my vision from tears of laughter from looking at those posts above yours... lol omg
If he needs glasses for reading can't he just use them for his drivers test and pass? Not sure I'm understanding the problem, sorry!
reading glasses are for close-up not distance... so they might not help.
some people can see alright such as speedometer, road signs, people, cars but still be close on vision test depending on state

Perhaps, but those rules don't apply for DOT vision testing.
Now, it was seven years ago... but when I took the first test to get my first license- I passed the paper test with a 100% and promptly failed the vision test. My parents joke to this day that when they dropped me off at school I was "talking to the gas meter" If you fail (as I did) they will let you try again but in my case...I really was blind and (scary to think I was driving around with my permit before that) and had to go to the optometrist
