Judge finds NC ‘Choose Life’ plates unconstitutional | MyFOX8.com

The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina Legal Foundation had filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina in Sept. 2011 on behalf of North Carolinians seeking a specialty license plate that supports a woman’s right to reproductive freedom.

“This is a great victory for the free speech rights of all North Carolinians, regardless of their point of view on reproductive freedom,” said Chris Brook, legal director of the ACLU-NCLF.

In what world is removing free speech a victory for free speech? If anything, require the state to make plates for both sides, don't just sue for the sake of taking away.

Also, as if we don't have bigger constitutional issues to solve in this state. The ACLU-NCLF have time and time again proven themselves to be jackasses.

The first paragraph in the article covered this- "A federal judge has ruled it is unconstitutional for North Carolina to issue pro-life license plates unless the state offers similar plates supporting abortion rights."

So, yes it is a great victory for free speech and your point (in bold) is pointless because the state, before the ruling, was impeding the free speech of others by not offering both types of plates.

It really doesn't sound like they were suing just for taking away. I think the judge made a good call.

"however, officials say the legislature repeatedly refused to authorize a plate that supported the countervailing position in favor of reproductive freedom."

Yep I totally agree with the judge. If you're going to offer political plates, you need to offer both. It'd be like offering a Democrat donkey plate and refusing to offer a Republican elephant.

Or better yet don't offer novelty plates at all outside the fundraisers. Who is so narcissistic they need to express their identity through a license plate?

Yep, the judge's ruling is entirely appropriate. Just another example of the "jackass" Republicans (if I may borrow a term from the OP) trying to shove their view of "morality" down our throats. I wish they wouldn't waste time on things like this, and focus more on improving our educational system and economy. Then again, they've done a pretty good job of screwing up education, so maybe it's better they waste their time on things that won't harm us as much.

But how else will I let my fellow man know of my love of watermelon?

That seems rather self evident to me.

The people are still welcome to express their personal opinion in support of any political position
they like on the back of their cars... but they must do it without the gravitas of implied state sanction.
They're welcome to use the bumper stickers and such just like everyone else.

But that's the whole point though- make everyone know that we're a Christian state, whatever that's supposed to mean- by having an implicit endorsement of a subset of a subset of a denominational belief, which of course has no theological basis.
