It's clear when selling a vehicle titled in NC to a buyer in NC, the sellers signature must be notarized on the sellers title.

But if buying/titling a vehicle in NC that is purchased from a private seller in FL, will the sellers signature on the FL title need to be notarized? FL does not require titles to be notarized. Will NC accept the un-notarized FL title when applying for NC title?

I realize the NC title application will need to be notarized but I need to know if the FL title will be accepted by the NC DMV with an un-notarized sellers signature.

Thanks.

Tipsy

If you read the NC DMV website, it says the title signature must be notarized. It makes no distinction between in-state and out-of-state transfers.

For the record, the NC DMV did not require a notarization on the FL title.

That's good. The DMV website doesn't specifically address this, so it's not very clear.

Thanks for following up to let us know!

I sold a Michigan truck in NC. The DMV told me if the state where the title originates does not require notarization, then it does not have to be notarized. They told me to follow the rules from where the title is currently held.
I also bought a truck with a Florida title and did not have it notarized.

I am a notary in NC and was asked to notarized a title and the seller was selling the vehicle in 2011. The title was signed by buyer and seller and notary but not stamped. I refused to cross out the notaries signature and sign it. Would the seller have to get a new title?
