I wouldn't say this is the biggest influence ever in the state. Take a look at the following symbols that should be very familiar to you.

^^^There are two dates on these popular NC symbols. The bottom date represents the Halifax Resolves while the date up top represents the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. Both of these dates paved the way for America's independence. Also, they both show that the power structure in NC has been East vs West for a long time.
I only decided to bring this up because the whole East vs West thing has evolved quite a bit with all of the transplants to this state. Today, the East tends to bring in new blood in the form of the Democratic party while the West is mostly Republican. Amendment one (which I thought was dumb bigotry against NC citizens) was the republican party's way of sending a message to the new Democrats to this state. The message was this; "NC may have gone blue, but the core values of this state are red". Like it or not, they were right. Many rural Democrats voted in favor of Amendment one. Only the real liberal areas of NC (only 7 counties out of 100) voted against it.
With that said, I'd suggest that anyone who thinks that "NC dems are liberals just like me" need to think again. Republicans in places like Portland Oregon are more accepting to liberal ideology than the average NC dem is (especially a rural eastern NC dem).
Which brings me back to many of the comments on this thread. Though I'm not crazy about the Art Pope pick either, I think too many folks (mostly Dems) are calling McCrory a failure before he's actually started the job. I say give him time. Time will judge whether or not he was good for NC. It's like some folks are so brainwashed into thinking that "the other party can't ever do good".
I personally voted for Obama and McCrory, but if my picks didn't win, I certainly wouldn't have prejudged the "other guy". I think Romney might have been a good president (far better than Bush, but not as understanding of the common man as Obama). As for Dalton, well....
he seemed like an extension of Perdue that would not have turned out well at all. Clearly, the presidential race was much more of a toss-up than NC's race for governor. The choice was clear with the latter; VERY clear.
The Art Pope pick...
I find it so funny that the John Locke folks are now jumping onto the McCrory bandwagon. It wasn't long ago that these folks tried to run him and his "choo choo" out of Charlotte. They wanted mass transit expansion off of NC's budget so badly that they lied to get the vote (to end the transit sales tax) to the public just weeks before the line was sceduled to start service. The public shot that effort down with a 70/30 defeat of the transit tax repeal. The plan was to embarrass McCrory, but the exact opposite happened. I guess the John Locke guys figured "hey, if you can't beat him, join him". It will be interesting to see how this shot-gun wedding turns out.
