We are from Colorado, considered by some as the organic capital of US. We are looking to move to NC because dry climate is very bad for my husband's health. We travelled to SC last year and had a very hard time finding an organic store. What areas are organic-friendly in NC, if any? Thank you.

Asheville and Boone in the mountains are very organic friendly. In the middle of the state the Orange County/Chatham County/Durham County region of the Triangle is very organic friendly with several farm to table restaurants. This is the area around Chapel Hill/Carrboro and Durham. Wake County where Raleigh is has some organic stuff going on, but not as much as the western part of the Triangle. There's a really big local food scene in the Durham/Chapel Hill region and the Asheville region and the Boone area. You can find organic stores in most of the major cities in NC — there are certainly some in Charlotte and also many smaller co-ops in places like Greensboro and Wilmington, but the other areas I mentioned have the most interest in organic food.

Here's some Durham/Chapel Hill press. I'm sure Asheville has similar.

I would second Chapel hill, Durham and Carrboro, many organic farmers in the area.
We live in Wilmington and also have plenty of organic choice at grovery stores, farmers market during
the summer, Whole Foods, etc.

There are also several CSA organizations all over NC.
Perhapsby checking under those you can pinpoint where you
will be comfortable a bit better.

The Raleigh area has several stores which offer organic foods.

Whole Foods
Trader Joe's
Fresh Market
Whole Foods
Earth Fare
Harmony Farms

Many wholesale clubs including Costco, BJ's, and Sam's now offer many organic foods as well.

You shouldn't have a problem finding organic in NC unless you are in a very small town. After all, NC has a long heritage of organic - this is where Mother Earth News got it's start!

Farmers Markets (not the state run markets) and tail gate markets abound. There are plenty of CSA's, but many fill up quite fast. Most regions have yearly farm tours with a focus on organic. Slow Foods has active chapters in Asheville and the Triangle.

Some resources:
Piedmont Farm Tour | Carolina Farm Stewardship Association
Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project - Appalachian Grown Program
Edible Piedmont Magazine - Local Food Magazine of North Carolina

Really, the only thing that is difficult to obtain is raw milk - NC laws do not allow cow shares like some states do.

Carrboro, though it's expensive.

Asheville, also expensive.

Depends on whether you want Piedmont or mountains.

There are pockets of "organic types" in any of the metros, but the "granola head" [stereo]types would be more found in Carrboro (the "Berkeley of the Southeast") or Asheville.

What kind of work would you be looking for? That might affect where you could find something.

Thank you, but we do not support corporations that sell organic food for the sake of profits only, at the same time supporting Monsato and all other anti-organic companies.

The area north of Durham -- Person to Warren County is littered with farms that are transforming into organic growers for the DC, Richmond and Durham/Raleigh food markets. Warrenton, NC in Warren County has some exciting local food and organic developments taking place right now.
