I'm looking to relocate to North Carolina from upstate NY (Buffalo). I've lived in Mobile, Chicago, Cincinnati, Washington DC, Nashville and now Buffalo. Unfortunately, due to tough economic times in the Architect & Engineering Fields (going where the work is), I'm stuck in Buffalo, NY.

Quite frankly, Buffalo is the armpit of America. I've never seen a place so full of wide spread misery in my life (32 years old). Everyone hates it here. Outside of New York City the rest of the state is a cesspool of high unemployment, crime, over taxation and just rude miserable people.... period.

The state Government (Albany) is so anti business that most of the private job creators have left, leaving behind the poor and the retired gray hairs, who head south during the winter. I've had enough. I don't mind winter and the changing seasons, but the never ending misery is wearing me down and I don't want to be stuck here in my late 30's early 40's.

North Carolina (Charlotte, Wilmington, Ashville, Raleigh, Durham) all appeal to me. I enjoy visiting the region and would welcome the opportunity to relocate if given the chance. I am southern (born and raised in Mobile, AL), so i don't feel the cultural shock that many northerns do when moving south.

If anyone has recommendations or leads for a firm looking for an experienced, licensed Landscape Architect / Land Engineer, please email me. I have worked closely with Civil Engineers, Structural Engineers and Architects.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Note that NC State University in Raleigh offers a Landscape Architecture degree, so competition in Raleigh would probably be heavy. Since you mention "going where the work is", what have you learned about the hotspots for your field and the dry areas? NC is #5 in the US for unemployment in general (5th HIGHEST), I presume you are aware?

Have you been to Land 8 Lounge ? Lots of LA discussion there. Some of them are from N.C. and will vouch that it's tough here too, to make it as an LA.
