But Raleigh and Charlotte are just dumb; hand-out wanting democratic strongholds in our great state who know nothing about business with their high taxes and stupid regulations and education crap.
(sarcasm)
I saw that article also. I was a little disappointed there wasn't more substance. To me, it was sort of common sense.
So what's the deal with Raleigh losing two headquarters within a month?
Kerr Drug & Car Quest; are they big losses? Or is it just a slow news day in CLT?
Based on the article it seems pretty clear to me. Both companies were gobbled up by larger competitors. Usually when a weaker company is acquired by a competitor it is the smaller guy that moves, not the other way around. The loss of these two headquarters while unfortunate speaks less to the clout of Raleigh and more to the poor position these acquired companies found themselves in.
There wasnt really any news besides the sports, festivals & cancer walks.
The loss of "the prestige" of those two companies seemed pretty irrelevant. Obviously Kerr Drug & the othe company Lost out to Walgreens & Autozone. Kerr Drug doesn't even have any stores outside of NC...
Oh! And Ruth Samuelson not seeking another term! Hate her.

I was being sarcastic, but apparently that didn't travel over the Internet. His lovely rep comment seems to agree.
I don't think Kerr is a huge loss, but Carquest has ~3,000 locations and is an International company.
Raleigh has never really been hot for large company HQs which isn't a bad thing, but this is taking another away. Will all the locations stay a Carquest and operate under the Advance name, or will they all be turned into Advance locations?
Charlotte kicks butt (only behind Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami in the south).
Impressive considering Raleigh has Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill, etc. the best outside of Charlotte we have is probably Concord....
Kicks butt in what? Austin, Durham and Chapel Hill (Raleigh's neighbourhoods pretty much) are one of the core creative / knowledge economies in the USA. This is where the future lies, in the hands of the knowledge/creative economy that Bay Area, DC, NYC, Boston, Austin and Durham are leading miles ahead.
Charlotte needs to focus on building "charm", character and diverse economies (other than banking) that will attract creative class. A good research university in the area would have helped. Note all those places lsited have good universities.
Also, being compared to Altanta, Houstonand Miami are NOT compliments. Those are cities with decent economy but spread out, horrible sprawl, poor transit, little intellectual culture! The economy is not sustainable unless they transition into creative economies. Houston will be fine money wise due to oil but we need CULTURE. Houston is more like Abu Dhabi and Hong Kong. Lots of money but no culture, interesting people, intellectual environment, art-sy, sciences. All these things are present in NYC and San Francisco (those are cities worth being compared to).
Durham has the highest concencration of creative class (the key component of a knowledge economy).
