Post recession job growth isn't the only way Raleigh is waaaay cooler than Charlotte:

NEW YORK TIMES: "NC"s AXIS OF COOL"

"With its food trucks, design collectives and rehabbed downtowns, the Research Triangle — the patch of North Carolina that is home to Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and 150,000 college students — seems to be yet another hipster vibe factory. It’s Silver Lake, you think, just with a few more ‘‘yes, ma’ams.’’ But then you taste the okra and sniff the heirloom tomatoes. You meet an ex-vegan who’s smoking whole hogs and a church pastor who plays in a secular rock group. And speaking of music, it’s everywhere — beamed out from great college radio stations, seeping out of historic rock clubs and packaged by a growing local record industry. This is the kind of place where bands still play house shows, where a local will endorse a dingy club by telling you that, inside, it feels like you’re at a Halo of Flies show in 1988. You don’t really know what he’s talking about, but you must find out."

MEMPHIS WEIGHS IN ON RALEIGH:

Set among gently rolling hills, the capital city of North Carolina is one of three towns in what is known as the Research Triangle, which also includes Durham and Chapel Hill. Live Music Mania: Known as North Carolina’s “Capital of Live Music,” visitors can experience all styles of music at venues such as the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion, Lincoln Theatre and Kings Barcade. If you’re a bluegrass fan, you’ll be right at home in Raleigh. North Carolina has a rich history of bluegrass—both Earl Scruggs and the legendary guitarist Doc Watson hail from the state. Just last year, the International Bluegrass Music Association announced they’re moving their World of Bluegrass event to Raleigh for the next three years—2013, 2014 and 2015. This year, it will be held September 24-28. Culture and Food: Noted by some as the “Smithsonian of the South,” Raleigh offers a variety of outstanding events and programs at the North Carolina Museum of Art, the Museum of Natural Sciences and the Museum of History. n.c. museum of natural sciences nature research. After satisfying your artistic and intellectual side, enjoy Raleigh’s many culinary treasures. Touted as one of the “top 10 tastiest towns in the South” by Southern Living Magazine, the area is best known for its great barbecue, but a host of other restaurants with unique dishes and world-class chefs are outstanding as well.. If you do wish to satisfy a craving for barbecue, two tasty options are The Pit or Clyde Cooper’s Barbecue, both in downtown Raleigh. Return to Your Inner Student. Three gorgeous campuses are situated in and around Raleigh. North Carolina State University in Raleigh, Duke University in Durham, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Each campus and town has its own charms and unique sites to see.

Charlotte has some office buildings uptown and a street car. Not sure if anyone will confuse the city for Atlanta or New Orleans though, I guess you either have culture and character or you don't, trying to copy someone else's seems a little desperate

Lot of activity in uptown with respect to construction, the next round of development could see a movement towards more retail. It's be interesting to see which areas the light rail extension will impact or spur development besides NoDA and UNCC.

"When it comes to replacing (and exceeding) the jobs lost in the Great Recession, Raleigh is waaay cooler than Charlotte."

Charlotte lost 72,400 jobs in the recession. It has since added 100,900 jobs, for a recovery rate of 140%. Nice job, Queen City.
But Raleigh. Oh, Raleigh. The state's capital lost 33,100 jobs in the recession. It has added 71,000 jobs since then. That's a 214% recovery rate. Wow. But, but, but — no. It had nothing to do with government jobs, Connaughton says. That sector has been flat in the Raleigh metro area, he says. The growth is coming from tech and research jobs, plus health and education. Charlotte's growth is coming from professional services and leisure and hospitality, among other sectors.

The math:

Charlotte: 100,900 - 72,400 = +28,500 gain
Raleigh: 71,000 - 33,100 = +37,900 gain

At that's within a city limits area half the diameter of Charlotte's and is not including any of Raleigh large and booming suburbs within Wake County along the Raleigh city limits outer outer ring. (*note also: this is not from Forbes, it's from the Charlotte Business Journal )

Thousands of jobs added in Charlotte in March - Charlotte Business Journal

Unemployment in the Charlotte metro area is nearing a new post-recession low.

Employers in the Charlotte metropolitan area added 8,300 jobs in March, pushing the local unemployment rate down to 5.3 percent, according to the latest data from the N.C. Department of Commerce.

That's down from 5.5 percent in February, representing a new low for 2015. The only time since before the recession the local jobless rate has been lower was in December, when the revised rate was 5.1 percent.

The trade, transportation and utilities sector led all local industries in terms of gains last month as well as for the past 12 months, the report posted Wednesday by the department’s Labor & Economic Analysis Division shows.

Over the year, the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro area has added 36,700 nonfarm jobs. The area's unemployment rate in March 2014 was a full percentage point higher at 6.3 percent.
