That is a very cool looking little building. Glad people in Charlotte are interested in saving these kinds of structures as they are very important to the urban fabric.

Portman from Atlanta, built the Western Hotel and going to build a 19 story office behind it.

Portman has built projects all over the world. He is the man Raleigh need to go after to do a project in downtown Raleigh.

Oh okay...this thread moves so fast I can't keep up. Every time I look at it like 10 pages have been added. Good for Raleigh! Raleigh has done a decent job at saving historic buildings, hasn't it?

Portman completely transformed downtown Atlanta...not necessarily for the better because his buildings were very fortress-like and didn't address the street well, but he certainly added density to the core of the city. I think their projects are a lot better now than they were then...they were a product of that era.

I look at that picture and I could not place the building in the background as Charlotte.

I think that a city can zone now to get better development such as retail on ground level.

What about Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, New York City, San Francisco, Mexico City, Panama City, or Frankfurt? All of those places have a nice bit of high rises and pretty awesome culture.

The there's places like Dubai, manufactured "culture" and entertainment, very little character or soul….but they have a lot of new tall buildings
