I'm convinced now moreso that you really don't read my post but look for a confrontation. In a post I've made before I've addressed Charlotte being the "2nd banking" capital after NYC. Banking and financial centre are not necessarily the same thing (which I know you're aware). I encourage you to look through this thread and see where I have touted this. As you have stated, the majority of this is due to BOA. Nice, we'll take it like you'll take SAS (although SAS is much better work environment). A financial centre is based on the actual financial activity, such as stock option trading, hedge funds, venture capital, derivatives, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, bond markets, etc. This is why even though banking, Charlotte kicks cities like Boston, San Francisco, and Dallas butt it fails to the three in finances. However, what Charlotte has accomplished in that is still impressive. The fact that it is the 2nd leading banking despite being waaaay smaller. Not to mention that BOA is homegrown company; that should make any NCian happy. Which is how I can tell a true NCian from a transplant. Us Tarheels love the whole state and see no problem in pulling for the Panthers and happy about Wolfpack football. Or glad to have the Hornets name back and excited about Duke winning the NCAA tournament.

Best Cities For Bankers - Business Insider

Well, at least Charlotte did barely place on this list of US cities for bankers. #14. (southern cities that were higher than Charlotte: Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, DC)

Banking towns are hip and cool! Said no one ever.

(unless you're New York, Chicago, Boston or San Francisco…of course, they offer so much more than just banking)

The total land square miles in the Triangle is 5,510.68 (2,118.20 for Raleigh and 1,758.44 for Durham) whereas Charlotte is 5,926.06 (5,066.72 for the MSA). The total population and density for both areas are as follows:

Metrolina: 2,537,990 people, 5,926.06 sq.mi. 428.28 ppsm
Triangle: 2,075,126 people, 5,510.68 sq.mi. 376.59 ppsm

So as you can the Triangle as a whole is not more dense than Metrolina. But let's look at the three MSAs
Charlotte 2,380,314 people, 5,066.72 sq.mi., 469.79 ppsm
Durham 542,710 people, 1758.44 sq.mi., 308.63 ppsm
Raleigh 1,242,974 people, 2118.20 sq.mi., 586.80 ppsm

Now looking at the MSAs Raleigh is definitely more dense than Metrolina. One thing I do want to point out, though, is that the MSA of Charlotte packs in more people than the CSA of the Triangle. So one myth that has been debunked is the Triangle being more dense Metrolina but it is true that Raleigh MSA is more dense than Charlotte.

So let's look at total personal income which has rarely talked about in this comparison but this definitely speaks to the spending power and another way to view the economics of a region. The numbers are total personal income in thousands of dollars, 2013 population, and per capita income
Metrolina: $102,522,195; 2,493,040; $41,123
Triangle: $86,516,517; 2,037,430; $42,464

Once again the figures are from BEA.gov and the figures are from 2013. So as we see the Metrolina has a much higher TPI but its per capita is lower than the Triangle. So this does prove true. Whether or not it is significant, the difference between the two comes to $111.75 a month. So now let's examine Wake and Mecklenburg county. Once again same format as above.

Mecklenburg $48,665,506; 990,977; $49,109
Wake $44,911,652; 974,289; $46,097

So in comparing the two monster counties of NC Mecklenburg does pack a bigger punch than Wake although Wake is by no means a slouch. So I hope that this shows that for all we've seen about the high tech jobs in Raleigh and the higher education in Raleigh, Charlotte actually excels compared to Raleigh. Something I do want to point out Wake and Mecklenburg are 4th and 3rd respectively per capita in the state. Chatham is 1 and Orange is 2 and Durham is 10. The Triangle is pretty impressive.
Something I just want to point out. With all of the accolades from Forbes, the facts above still stand.

Something is drawing them here.

That's why our center city is growing much larger.
