FAA says some NC airports could close, others have shifts cut
Five smaller air traffic control facilities could be closed, and two could have overnight shifts eliminated, according to a report from the Federal Aviation Administration.
The FAA said Coastal Carolina Regional in New Bern, Kinston Regional Jetport, Hickory Regional, Smith Reynolds in Winston-Salem and Concord Regional could all be closed, according to a recent document.
In addition, the airports in Fayetteville and Greensboro could have overnight shifts eliminated, the FAA said.
The federal government is looking for ways to slash costs after the sequester. The FAA reported Feb. 22 that it was planning for $600 million in spending cuts in 2013.
Confirmed today that there will be no air traffic controllers at EWN (New Bern) any more. The airport will stay open but no one is directing landings/takeoffs.

The Marines will take control over New Bern. The employees at both airports are contractors. Could effect up to 9.
The Marines aren't slated to do any such thing. "Mr." Tom Braaten is going to approach the Marines/Cherry Point to do this. That said, if anybody can ge them to do it, it's him. Because in a former life he was Major General Bratten and served as the Commander, Marine Corps Air Bases East and Commanding General, MCAS Cherry Point, from July 1998 until his retirement in July 2001. The reason I put "Mr." parentheses. He still pulls enough weight that he rates a bio page on the USMC manpower page:

Well technically speaking what they will or won't do can't be determined until they say what they will or won't do. Having said that, I admit I must have misread something because I usually don't jump to conclusions.
I didn't know Ellis was operating without controllers.
