Especially when it's the most heavily subsidized form of transit, 10x the subsidies that the next closes method of travel, air, receives. Almost 1/3 of the average Amtrak fare is government cheese.

The train is a real option for short distance compared to the hassle of going through airport security. Friends have gone to DC for a long weekend, leaving their cars in Wilson. The parking at the station isn't in the safest area, so they leave their car at a friend's house.

Amtrak from Southern Pines to Newark, NJ or NYC is cheaper than driving for one person.Takes about 2 more hours but you can relax instead of driving.
