Years ago, new car dealers convinced most state legislatures to write laws that basically prevent a car manufacturer from selling directly to the public. In other words, dealers got their businesses written into law. Imagine that. Now dealers do everything they can to protect their legislative-given right to be an intermediary. I think it stinks.
evaofnc, of all people, you don't have any lobbyists yet? Boy, are you missing out! (Just imagine what sorts of goodies you could have in that "tax reform" deal they'll be ramming through soon.) Jeez. I'd suggest that you oughtta hire me, but I'm not sure that'd help...
If manufacturers sold directly to public they would have to set up a whole new part of their business to facilitate it.
As for not liking the laws. NC has hundreds of laws restricting competition. How about healthcare? The number of Doctors, nurses, hospital beds,MRI machines all artificially limited and enforced by laws. Been to a dentist lately? All examples of supply being restricted resulting in much higher costs to the patient/consumer.

So what? That's not an undue burden, since obviously a small startup company is capable of doing it. If that's where the market goes, then they can either adapt or fail. The automakers probably don't care one way or the other how their product gets sold, so long as it does. Plus selling direct they can make even more profit by charging closer to retail instead of invoice.
This is about middlemen fighting to keep their spot when market efficiencies threaten to render them unnecessary.

But not Tesla since that's what they already do.
