Some would argue that any city in any metro outside of Charlotte, to include Raleigh and Durham, are "suburby"
What? Are you suggesting that Charlotte isn't suburby?
As the largest city in land area by far, Charlotte has more suburby area than any other city in North Carolina.
My family and I just moved to Apex which is 20-25 minutes from downtown Raleigh and RTP. The new section of 540 (tolled) just opened through Apex last year, which makes commuting to RTP and Durham a breeze.
Apex has one of the highest median incomes in the state, the LOWEST poverty rate out of any municipality (that I could find) and one of the absolute lowest crime rates in the state. It's very family oriented and everyone is super friendly. It's growing and has grown very rapidly. It's gone from just under 5,000 residents in the 1990 census to approximately 40,000 people in 2013. The town estimates that it will be around 70,000 by 2040.
I don't regret our decision to move here and would do it all over again given the chance.

No, I'm saying in living IN any of the other cities in NC can still feel like you're living in a suburb. If you live in Charlotte, for the most part you know you live IN the city/a city.

Well, that just isn't true...living in the urban area of any of NC's 5-7 largest cities is NOT like living in a suburb. All of the cities have many suburban-type areas within the city limits - including Charlotte. Those neighborhoods are very easy to find.

I don't know how many times I've heard people speak of the cities in Triangle feeling like overgrown suburbs, especially people from much larger cities.. To some that is to it's benefit, to others that's to it's detriment. I've never the city of Charlotte referred to as such. That doesn't mean you can't find suburby neighborhoods in the city, but I am speaking of the overall feel of the city/area.
Actually outside of the uptown area, Charlotte has always seemed very suburban to me. I grew up in Northern Virginia which is one giant suburb...outside of uptown the better areas of Charlotte look like NoVA, as they also do in Raleigh and surrounding suburbs (just to a slightly smaller scale).

It all depends on where you are talking about...living in downtown Asheville is nothing at all like living in a suburb, and the same goes for the other larger cities in NC (including Triangle cities downtown). On the other hand, there are in-town areas in almost every city in the U.S. that look suburban, so that is nothing unique or surprising. All NC cities have large residential areas within the city limits that could be mistaken for suburbs, but they still have downtown urban areas too.

How does suburban towns involve the discussion of which is more urban; Charlotte or Raleigh. Everyone knows how both cities stack up against each other...
If I didn't care about wanting to live in a bigger city, I'd 100% head out to Wilmington in their suburbs. The Mayfaire mall area is so beautiful and smells like ocean
