I am a guy and will agree that nothing beats a girl speaking with a southern twang. Will take that over nasal northern any day.

Tell her the best way to handle it is to be able to laugh WITH others about her accent. If she can smile and laugh each time someone teases her, and maybe have a few friendly comebacks as mentioned above ("I think all of ya'll have accents!", "I guess I must sound funny to all of you"), she will quickly make friends and no longer feel teased. Kids just pick up on anthing that is different about another kid, so the best way to diffuse verbal teasing is to maintain a great sense of humor.

Agreed, laughing back and them and with them as the best remedy. But doing it in a friendly manner. There's also something to be said for schooling the rest of her class academically. I loved being the guy in my Ivy League school with the hick accent who rocked all these private school northeastern lib bluebloods. It was a lot of fun.

She just needs to be proud of who she is.

Honestly, she really just needs to stand up for herself.

Were I picking on someone and they laughed it off, I'd be even more relentless. And keep taking it a step farther each time. I can imagine quite a few kids in general would do the same.

It's generally not where someone is from but how vulnerable someone is.

Kids are like fish. If they see another struggling beautiful large fish fighting to stay alive, even the puniest, dorkiest, ugly little whimpy fish will swim up fast and nibble the big beautiful fish. Same with all these hooligans in school today.

What city up north do you live in? I experienced the same issue when I lived in Syracuse, New York. I am from Raleigh, North Carolina, which is a larger, more vibrant city than Syracuse, NY. They would talk to me like I was some "dumb country" bumpkin that never experienced civilization....I would simply laugh, and inform them that I couldn't wait to move back "south".

I always enjoy going up north. Sometimes people think I'm dumb because of my accent, then realize I'm not and think I've overcome something big that wasn't there in the first place. Always a pleasure.

There is nothing wrong with and nothing to be ashamed of for being from the south and having a southern accent. As a native from the charlotte area I am proud of where Im from and speak my southern english with pride!! She should be proud as well and ignore the ignorant Yankees who make fun of her...I've always been angered at how northerners make fun of southerners like they are better than us...the way they speak english is often no more correct than the way we do...they make fun of words like yall while using words like yooze guys!! Only the english in great Britton speak the original form of the language..the north has changed english as much as we have in the south tell the girl to be proud of where she is from..and hopefully one day she can get back to Dixie where the people are alot friendlier..and tell her to not let herself loose that southern accent it is something to be proud of

This OP posted a few times under multiple ID's a couple of years ago. They were all sort of odd posts. She hasn't been on the forum in nearly 2 years. IMO, there's no need to keep this thread alive.

Yep and I seem to notice a barrage of threads about the southern degree of NC. I'm going to guess it's not a coincidence.
