I moved to Oregon in 2012. I did not register the vehicle here when my Ohio registration expired. I will be relocating to North Carolina soon. I'd rather not pay the $200 to Oregon and then have to turn around and pay again in NC. Is it possible to register the vehicle in NC with an expired Ohio registration?

I believe so. My NJ reg was expiring within 30 days after I moved to NC last year, and I never renewed it, so it was expired by the time I registered the car in NC. I had no issues at all.

Yes, as NC doesn't require the car to be current. You could have had it in storage for a few years for example; it does not matter.

Check the dmv site for details, but I believe you need to get the car inspected, then have proof of insurance, then pay the highway use tax (3.5%) to get a plate. Then you'll get a tax bill, and in future years your registration and tax will come at once.

Thanks! That makes me feel a lot better. Did you have a free and clear title or was the actual title being held by a lender?
My car has a loan against it so I do not have the real title, only a 'memo title' used for registering liened cars in Ohio.
Thanks again!

I had full titles both cars were paid off. I don't know if that makes any difference. Good luck to you!

What was your experience with the expired out-of-state registration with a lien on it? I'm going through a similar experience and having a difficult time connecting the bank (lien holder) to the DMV.
