I'm looking to buy some raw land (or partially developed with well, septic utilities) some place in NC to build a small cabin / home with a detached studio workshop. I've looked at places in Boone, etc, but this seems really expensive. I would ideally like to be within 90 minutes of the Triangle, Raleigh Durham area.
Does anyone have any suggestions about where to look? I keep hearing how cheap raw land is in NC, but the stuff up near Boone was running $50,000 an acre?

There have been several discussions like this in the past. For example, this: //www.city-data.com/forum/weste...g-retreat.html Land may have been cheap in NC about 30-50 years ago. However, in places like Boone, the prices have increased because of retiree and second home builders.
I'm sure you can find some land w/in 90 min of the Triangle that is priced cheaper, but it won't be as scenic and may be out in the middle of nowhere. Check out the counties — Granville, Vance, Nash, Wilson, Randolph, Alamance, Caswell, Person, southern/western Chatham (northern and eastern would be too expensive), northern Durham (could be expensive). The further away from a population center, the cheaper the land.
Boone is in a very scenic tourist area with correspondingly high real estate prices. The piedmont of NC is pleasant, but not known for scenic beauty like the mountains.

Moore County, around $5,000 + - an acre for undeveloped land loaded with Long leaf Pines.

I don't know where you were looking but ....
There are Hundreds of building lots in Wataugua (Boone) and Asle (Jefferson) for $10,000 - $30,000 / acre.
The only parcels near $50,000 are in some fancy subdivisions, or right on the New River.
