I'm looking to relocate to NC and I was hoping for some helpful tips!
Looking for:
-younger population (i'm 25)
-fairly liberal / democratic / educated residents
-scenic environment
-small to med. size town but still with things to do or adjacent larger towns
To give you some background information on me:
I was born and raised in Western Massachusetts- South Hadley - a small college town part of the 5 college area UMASS, Amherst, Hampshire, Mt. Holyoke, and Smith. There were always cool things going on...I could always catch a farmers market with fresh flowers and veggies, or going hiking right up the street. I would love a place with the same "outdoors" feel but an escape from the cold! I would love a place where I could enjoy the beauty of nature, a slower place, and near some type of water (ocean / lake / pond).

I vote for Chapel Hill/Raleigh. You said educated - the area is permeated w/ PhDs. And it is more liberal than most areas . . . so I vote for Raleigh, altho Asheville may be a good fit, too. Asheville is more granola/green than Raleigh - and is also liberal.
Please stay in New England. We are from New England as well but are conservative. Too many libs have moved to the Charlotte area already. One more is not necessary.

How amusing - coming from a transplant! I was actually wondering if the OP would feel at home here . . . as a liberal . . . but hesitated coming out and saying it b/c I am a native and didn't want it to sound like I am a Southerner who is not welcoming to newcomers! Much better coming from someone who actually knows the area where the OP lives . . . since you have more insight into comparing the two regions.
I really do believe Chapel Hill and Asheville would be a better match than Charlotte.

Sue, feel free to investigate any area you choose in North Carolina, and good luck with whatever you choose to do. I went to school in the Pioneer Valley and have found that Asheville reflects all the good things about Amherst and the surrounding area.
And to cbfrommass - do you realize that we would move from 'New England' or wherever you were located to get away from minds like yours (not your political views - whatever they might be - but your attitude). Funny how things work out...

Maybe that sounded more harsh than it was meant. I think CB was just warning Sue that this is not the most "liberal" area. I do think Asheville is less conservative than CLT - as is Chapel Hill.
FWIW my wife is from Millbury MA and her family is just as, if not more, conservative than my family.
Not all them yankees are bleeding-heart tax and spend liberals!
