Hi,
My daughter had her car stolen recently in Jacksonville, NC. The thief was drunk and naturally had an accident and wrecked the car, but thankfully did not total it. No one was hurt. The police caught the thief who admitted to stealing the car. Now, my daughter only had liability insurance on her car so her insurance company said they will not cover the damages. Obviously - we'll talk to her about having more coverage later.

When she contacted the thief's insurance company, they told her they were not responsible for the damages because their client (the thief) stole the car and did not have permission to drive the car. So, my question ....is the thief's insurance company truly obligated to cover damages that their client caused to a car he stole? Does NC auto insurance go with the driver or just the car?

Thanks

The thief's car insurance only covers damages he has done while he is in his own car. In this case, he is not in his own car. I feel for you as I my very first car was stolen from me months after I bought it. Good luck

Sorry OP, but this is correct. You'll have to sue him.

How old was the car? I usually drop down to just liability when the car is worth less than 5,000 dollars.

Oh wow. On a car that new, I would definitely recommend having full coverage.

I use $5,000 as my cutoff because lower than that, the age and cost of deductible isn't worth it to pay extra for comprehensive coverage.
