My husband and I have lived in central NY our entire lives. Both our families are from here. My father has talked about moving somewhere warmer for most of my life. I think if we took the first step my parents would gladly follow if not visit often (so I at least don't have to worry about getting homesick for family, I hear that's one of the reasons others regret moving out of state). We currently live in Rome NY. We're happy enough here but the taxes are high, the economy isn't great and ugh the winter! We were considering moving to New Hartford NY which is only 20 minutes away. The taxes are even higher but the town is much nicer and has more to offer as far as shopping, restaurants, etc. We both work there so our commute would be 5 minutes instead of 20...or 30+ on snowy roads. But the more we talk about moving the more we talk about moving out of state. We're sick of the snow but also the high taxes and all the other negative things NYS is noted for. We live in a small cape cod in the city and our property taxes are $3200 for a $89,000 house with a tiny yard. Our public school is ranked as one of the worst in the state. The city is relatively safe though as is most of the surrounding towns. It seems like all the young people are moving away because they can't find work here. My oldest wants to live near us when she moves out, so I feel like I need to move somewhere with more to offer for my children's sake. We'd like somewhere that ideally had less snow, affordable property taxes (and school taxes), safe, friendly, bike friendly, walkable, homeschool friendly. We'd like a small house and hopefully a neighborhood where the houses aren't literally right on top of each other like in our current city (a development would be ok though). We'd like to be able to garden (I've never lived in a HOA type place so not sure if gardens are allowed). My husband is a PC Tech Specialist and I currently bartend part time and run a business out of my home sewing eco friendly clothing and boutique kids clothes and sell online and at local craft shows and farmer's markets. I could see myself in a quaint little town or college town. Nothing pretentious though. We are very down to earth and don't need anything fancy just a safe place and obviously somewhere we could find employment. Recently several of my friends have moved to NC and SC and seem very happy so it made me start giving them both some serious thought. My parents rent a house in near Myrtle Beach each winter but other than that none of us have any experience with NC. I've never been there and my husband has never been out of NYS. I have friends that live in Waxhaw, Asheville and Raleigh, they've given their two cents but I'd love to hear from others. Thanks so much in advance for any recommendations or thoughts!

First, I'd suggest making plans to visit your friends in each of the three cities. You need to learn whether you would really like North Carolina.

The next step would be scoping out the job markets. Raleigh and the Charlotte area would both be areas where a PC tech and a bartender might find work. They both will have suburbs and developments where you can find house with a little space.
