That is neither my intent nor my true sentiments about NC, but I am not going to give the impression that NC is CA or CO with just a slight southern twang... Based on the priorities that the OP listed its pretty clear what they're looking for and NC most likely isn't it. More dissatisfied transplants is not what the state needs..
Of course NC is no CA or CO - it is North Carolina. How can it also be Colorado? If you are implying that you need massive mountain ranges to have outdoorsy fun, you are making an incorrect statement. Western NC may not have the 10kft peaks the Rockies have, but has ample opportunity for....ample outdoors activities. You have clearly never been to WNC or maybe not even NC in general. But you're right, sure. Hiking to this peak wouldn't be outdoorsy at all just because it isn't CA or CO.

I agree. W-S is a great city. Maybe not perfect for the OP, but it is still a great city in many ways. Prime location, perfect size, fairly safe, great weather, good amount of job opportunities, decent growth...

I'm thinking about moving to NC for one year. The job I would have could be located at many different sites around the state, so I'm trying to get a good feel for which city would be best for my interests.
- I'm in my early 20s and won't know anyone so I want somewhere easy to meet people
- Love the outdoors
- Liberal if possible
- Walkable nightlife area
Thanks everyone
Perhaps start with the list of sties where your job might be located? It is impossible for a bunch of strangers to narrow down an entire state, not knowing you. Which cities that your job might be at, are you considering, and why?

Here come all the C-D brownshirts to beat up anyone with an opinion not in agreement with theirs... Why are any contrary opinions greeted with so much acrimony? If NC was such an amazing outdoor place, wouldn't it be plain for anyone to see?? No one would debate such a statement about Montana, CO, or CA. If you think NC is the greatest place on earth then it's some of you that should get out a little more..
My experience with Western NC (except Charlotte) is more limited, but I honestly rarely saw people come out of their houses unless their profession required it during the summer in Raleigh or anywhere eastward - we all know the heat and humidity are just too oppressive. In the fall some people would venture out to hunt or fish..

My shirt isn't brown, and I generally have no problem accepting that people may have different opinions, but when an opinion is contrary to plain facts, I (like other posters here) think it's important to point that out so people aren't misled. You said:
No where in NC is really "outdoorsy".
You then admitted that your experience in NC is limited, which is obvious if you really believe what you said is true. To point out your ignorance on this matter is not acrimony, but rather a service to anyone else who reads your tripe and may not realize how wrong you are. NC has countless outdoor opportunities that indeed make it very "outdoorsy", including world class white water, a wide range of hiking opportunities from easy to extremely strenuous (including the world-famous Appalachian Trail), world class mountain bike trails, numerous lakes and rivers and an ocean for boating, fishing, skiing, sailing, scuba diving, etc., large gameland tracts, one of the best state park systems in the nation, abundant wetlands, the most popular national park in the country, hang gliding sites, caves to explore, rock faces to climb, and on and on.
I'd say you are the one who needs to get out a little more.

I clearly said my experience was more limited with the Western part of NC. Many other states have lakes, rivers and a coastline...
Let's play your game - list of 20 best national parks in the Nation
Only one, just one is in NC. More than 50% are in the West. Who is spreading "tripe" now? That one park is probably amazing to someone who's never been elsewhere. Why are you so sensitive about me stating my opinion? What's your investment? Are you in real estate?
^ Haha, no, I'm not in real estate. I'm simply interested in trying to answer people's inquiries truthfully based on reality rather than ill-informed opinions.
Don't know exactly what you're trying to prove with your list of best state parks. It has little to do with what I said, which is that NC has one of the best state park systems in the country. When you consider the number of parks, the available facilities, the wide variety of activities available, the accessibility, and low fees, our parks system is top-notch. Add to that the state forests, national forests, national seashores, wildlife refuges, etc., and it's quite clear that NC is a very "outdoorsy" state, your opinion notwithstanding.
