I'm planning a trip to NC in May. A friend and I will be driving from Wisconsin to Asheville, Hendersonville, Morganton, Hickory, Charlotte, Rock Hill (SC), Salisbury, Winterville, down to Myrtle Beach, then back to Charlotte, where I will catch a plane home and my friend will keep driving. We're planning to camp (in a tent) most of the ten nights we'll be there, to cut costs, and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend good places to camp in any of these areas. We'll probably spend a couple of nights in hotels, so if there are certain areas that would be less safe to camp in, please tell me, and we will try to stay in hotels in those areas. We are a couple of 23-year-old females who are used to living in the reasonably safe midwest, and I'm slightly apprehensive about camping in a state where the crime rates are (in general) much higher than what we are used to here. Any tips or ideas would be great.

The general crime rates come mostly from Charlotte. The only place I can recommend is near Salisbury. It is Dan Nicholas Park, I'm not sure of the cost of camping there, but when the park closes the gates are up and the park rangers are there for security.
